Stick in the Sand Inc. is a non-profit community of like-minded parents and students committed to educating their children classically from a Christian perspective using Classical Conversations curriculum.
What is Classical Conversations?
The first key to a great education is that it is “classical.” By that we mean the classical model of education which has proven effective over time. This model has cultivated great leaders in the arts of freedom. Aristotle, Newton, C.S. Lewis and Thomas Jefferson are just a few examples of great thinkers who were educated classically.
A classical education is ideally suited to children’s natural learning style. The classical model divides the learning process into three stages: grammar, dialectic, and rhetoric. In the grammar stage, children devour facts. In the dialectic stage, children ask many questions as they sort and evaluate these facts. In the rhetoric stage, teenagers synthesize their knowledge and apply it.
From beginning to end, the Classical Conversations curriculum is founded on the Bible as the inerrant Word of God. Classical Conversations teaches that all subjects are not only interconnected but that God is the author and creator of each subject. Each subject informs us more about the true nature of God, and a better understanding of God informs us about each subject that is taught.
Classical Conversations plants and supports local communities who meet once a week across the United States and in several other countries. Being part of a like-minded and committed community provides parents and students encouragement, fellowship, and accountability.
Classical Conversations focuses on training parents to be great classical educators at home by hosting three-day summer conferences in many locations (testimonials). These conferences are called Parent Practicums because they give parents practical training in difficult subjects like math, logic, and Latin. Conference speakers also model classical teaching methods, such as the art of asking questions and leading discussions. Parent Practicums are free and available to anyone interested in classical, Christian education. Parents who are willing to become tutors receive trainings during the afternoon sessions of the 3-day conference and receive additional on-line support throughout the year. Learn more.
Following the mission: to know God and to make Him known,
utilizing the model: combining a biblical worldview and classical tools,
and employing the method: equipping parents and encouraging students,
Stick in the Sand Inc gathers to learn together, for the glory of God.
Our community meets weekly in Rice Lake, WI.
We currently provide Foundations and Essentials.
Whether you’re educating one, four, or twelve children, our Foundations Program makes learning FUN for both mom and student! Think one room schoolhouse. The blessing and joy of classical christian education is that it combines simplicity with excellence! Regardless of the number of students in your home, all children twelve years of age and under learn the same material! This greatly simplifies life and makes for great discussions around the dinner table!
The creator of Classical Conversations, Leigh Bortin’s, believes that God places children in a family (rather than in classrooms) and has set up the program to enable a parent to teach all their younger children together. For 24 weeks, 9 AM – noon, students learn about God’s world through math, geography, history, English, Latin, and science. Each week a science experiment and fine arts session is also included in the morning.
To honor the family budget, one set of minimal curriculum serves an entire family for all years of Foundations attendance. There is no need to buy new curricula for each student or for each new year.
A staffed nursery provides a safe, loving, oasis for siblings ages 3 and under. Parents attend the morning session along with their Foundations student(s).
Our Essentials Program is designed for students 4th – 6th grade. After attending the morning Foundations program and having a lunch break, students head to a classroom to learn all about English grammar and writing with their friends. Essentials is a complete language arts program. Surprisingly, there is not too much writing during class, but there is a lot of talking! Students compose sentences and learn the rules of writing by talking about them (what we call the dialectic model). Parents learn about English grammar and writing, too, because they attend class with their students. They watch a parent tutor model the lesson so that they can continue the lesson at home.
This program also includes a 30 minute math drill session where students play a variety of games to strengthen their math skills to help even the most reluctant student discover the beauty of numbers and language.
